St. Pete Times Forum Green Projects and Information

The Tampa Bay Lightning Organization is dedicated to the sustainability of the environment of the Tampa Bay Area. Our mission is to make the Tampa Bay Area a better place to live, work and play for today's and future generations. Our organization is committed to doing everything we can to reduce our environmental footprint and to encourage our fans to do the same in their homes. Together we will make a difference in the environment for today and tomorrow.
Together We Will
  • Reduce our electric consumption by 10%
  • Reduce our water consumption by 10%
  • Increase our recycling efforts by 10%
  • We recycle an average of 24,000 pounds of beverage containers annually. That is equal to 600,000 plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
  • We have been a “behind the scenes” recycling champion since 2003.
  • Our recycling efforts reduce our air emissions by 286.5 tons.
  • We won the Clean Air Partnership Award for Commuter Incentives.
  • We won the Business Bike Challenge for encouraging the most employees to bike to work.
  • Our energy savings from recycling equal a total of the energy used by 60 houses per year. We have changed out over 1,200 lighting ballasts to a more energy efficient, electronic type. Also in the process we eliminated over 200 lights from our Club level. We also installed occupancy sensors in 37 different areas. They control 180 light fixtures.
  • We have recycled a total of 85,274 pounds of metal as of June 2009.
  • We are dedicated to water and energy conservation. This is an average savings of 1,665,000 gallons of water annually.
  • Our paper recycling program annually saves 2304 trees from having to be cut down, 336,000 gallons of water, 22,224 gallons of oil and more than 144 cubic yards of landfill space.
  • We received the Hillsborough County Green Business Award for waste reduction and recycling practices in the 2006-07 season.
  • We received the Florida Recycles Today Award in December 2008.
  • The whole organization participated in the Mayor’s Beautification Campaign on July 14, 2009 by cleaning the banks of the Hillsborough River along Cotanchobee Park and the USF Park.
